Nitrogen is the most abundant defect in natural diamonds. It can be observed as single substitutional atoms or in aggregated forms. Boron, on the other hand, is a rare impurity in natural diamonds. It is very unusual to see both nitrogen and boron defects in a single diamond. GIA’s New York laboratory recently encountered this in a 0.33 ct diamond graded Fancy blue (figure 1).

I am curious about the facility that did this cvd overgrowth. They had to know that this technique could lead to fraud.

The diamond is relatively small. It would likely receive less scrutiny than larger diamonds.
Seems like it might have been an experiment to see what the facility doing the overgrowth could get away with.
