 Post subject: desert diamonds

A friend of mine has rotated from the Saudi peninsula and brought some desert diamonds. anyone have any idea what they are really ? he said they find them out in the sand

thank you. the ones I my buddy got were significantly clearer and when dipped in mineral oil showed me a lot about what the finished stone might look like. as with most clear quartz the better it looks in the rough the better it will turn out. I doubt a lot of the hype I've seen about how they are supposed to be just as sparkly as a diamond since quartz generally wont have enough dispersion to break the light down into its color components. Of course I am no gemology expert which is why I'm here to learn from the experts

Yup, it's all hype, but people do tend to underestimate colorless quartz because it's so common and cheap. If cut well it can still be a thing of real beauty.

Totally agree -- the cut's the thing. Despite it's relatively low RI a well-cut quartz gem, colorless or tinted pink or purplish like Rose de France amethyst, can be stunningly attractive and brilliant. Many people overlook the beauty and focus on value instead.

exactly...just look at the value of emerald and quartz and compare r.i.
