Well I've read that actually method of bombing them with neutrons from nuclear reactor leave radioactivity.

On the other hand, saying people about irradiation they thinks "irradiation=chernobyl=cancer" although it isn't true in some types.

Where can I find this pretty colours? How to check if they stay on being radioactive?

Radium has a 1/2 life of 1600 years.
Side bar: Marie and Pierre Curie discovered it in 1898. Both died from complications due to radiation poisoning.

One can buy a Geiger Counter to check for radiation.

I might be reacting to this topic a bit too late, anyway...a few years back I got curious about black diamonds and thus gathered information about these through the available litterature:
