Jewels of a different kind. I am in Alaska with my daughter who is recovering from an operation. I had a chance to get some aurora pictures, sorry these are not the best. It is a new camera and I had trouble with the focus. It is also not a fast enough lens, so I had to take long exposures. Shot on a Cannon T5, 28-80 F4 for roughly 20—30 seconds. My sister is sending me down a lenze that will go to F1.4, so the exposure will be be shorter and the shots a little crisper….. There is another geostorm tonight, but I am not sure the cloud cover will break. The last shot was as I was going home, really the best display of the night, but I could not get over and set up in time.
Absolutely stunning! I have a rainbow obsidian which looks very similar (currently being slabbed). Great job on the photos! I'm sorry to hear about your daughter though--I hope everything is OK.

There is another display right now, but it is headed toward norway. Wilsoninnorway is not going to happen in the next few hours.
We are suppose to have clear skys again tonight, and I might hit the end of thedisplay. They are releasing my daughter from the hospital in a few hours, so we will have to see how she is doing. It is abut a half an hour drive do the viewing site. I will have to see how she is doing,
My sister is sending me a new lense for the camers that is a little faster. That will reduce the exposure and should be able to get a sharper image. The best display I have seen so far was when I was driving home. It was a bright green vertical wall of light. But by the time I could pyll over it was gone.

The bucket list still has a hole in it. The forecast is for good aurora tonight and no clouds.
I will have to give up soon, staying out from midnight until 4:00 am is tough on this old body. I did bring my facet machine. I aligned it yesterday (it got a little bit abused by the luggage handlers. ) But someday soon, I hope to cut a few test stones for my daughter.
Two nights ago, the aurora was active, but so were the clouds. The clouds were in just the wrong place.
The purple haze would have been really good…. If only…..
This is frfrom the other night, I a=managed a double exposure, but it almost worked.
Last night, I drove for an hour and a half to find some clear skys, and the aurora decided to play hide and seek.
These are from a few years ago.
And these are the puppies I get to feed and entertain. I really did not like how he was licking his chops and looking at me.....

Went out last night, but waited to long. As I was driving up to the lookout, I could see the Aoura fading.
While I was waiting, I took this one, it is a 25 minute exposure of the north star. I wish my lense were wider to get the whole circle, and some of the mountain.
I had two 40 minute ones going, but each time at 39 minutes, the power supply blinked and the camera shut off.
(I was there a long time hoping that they would come back out )
The green at the bottom is a litgtle bit of the aoura showing up, but that is from a 25 minute exposure.
Oh well, maybe before I leave.
I am still waiting for a faster lense. I looked at one in the camera store that would do nicely. It is a 11-16 zoom... but it is also $450.....

Not many people stay to long at the door when we say we are not interested and add that the dogs needs to be let out for their exercise in a few minutes.

Nice photos everyone, I'm down the other end of the world in southern Tasmania. We get the Aurora Australis, some of the best ones I have seen are on clear still nights in our central highland area fishing for trout. Cheers MB
