our prayers go out to any of you affected by the flooding in Houston. Sally and I were living in Timber lakes/Timber Ridge in '94, the last time it flooded like this. We took our neighbors to what used to be their homes in our small boat and clipped chimney tops with the prop. Ours was one of 3 homes in the sub division that did not flood. It is still painful watching all your friends and neighbors loose everything. Power will be out for weeks, all the food will spoil in the freezers, cars flooded are going to be electrical nightmares if they run at all. If they had a job with a business that flooded out, they probably wont, as most smaller businesses cant survive the losses. This will not be a fast recovery for anyone you know affected by this. Be ready for long term support of friends and family if they are in this. It takes months to dry out walls after everything has been cleaned of the polluted water,(sewage treatment plants get flooded too) and mud and mold before sheetrock can be replaced. Thats providing insurance covered anything. Homes built where it flooded in '94 and 2001 cant get flood insurance.
Things people will need most, depend on the losses they have suffered. Assume anyone living in a single story home that got flooded lost everything. Start with the basics, clothing, food, water, a place to stay, for starts. Shelters are not a place to stay for more than a few days. If you consider them "family" take them in to your home until they can get in to asses what they have left. It may be weeks for some only a few days for others. Unfortunately it looks like more rain through the weekend. If it looks like a lost cause try to help them find a cheap place to rent and a job of some kind to start them back on track. Then step back and let them figure it out. You cant change it, cant fix it, but you can help them move forward.
Send your prayers, give support and aid if you can.
Dan & Sally Holland with friends still in Houston
