Hello I'm new here. I have an interesting rock at first I thought it was pyrite but as I looked into it further the texture is different as well as it is not magnetic.. upon further investigation under different lights it shows different colors in parts a man thinks it may possibly be alexandrite.where would I get this tested? It weighs 3.5 kilos
Well, you are correct, it is a rock. It looks to be composed of a variety of minerals which is what defines it as a rock. What each of these minerals are cannot be determined with any degree of certitude by looking at a picture. You will need to find a local expert.
Go to a local mineral/rock club or rock show and someone can id it for you. Looks to me like agate/jasper - like a thunderegg. But a picture really isn't enough to go by.
