I been studying and cutting the designs in Fred Van Sant's "Star Cuts" book. I am always amazed by his genius. There is something to be learned about the play of light through a gem stone in each design. However, there are so many ideas in the book that I will never to cut all of them. I am wondering whether any one else is as impressed with his designs as I am, and if so, would like to exchange thoughts and photos of finished stones?

Fred Van Sant is my favorite faceting designer by far. :) I'd have loved to meet him and have a chat...

It is hard to choose absolute favorites, but his designs are amazing. His life story was fairly wonderful as well!

Regarding Fred's Star Cut series, is it still available for sale anywhere? ... and how many of the Star Cut series are already on the Datavue database? There seem to be many of Freds designs on Datavue but they may be different to the Star Cut series. Can anyone advise please

Regards,
GR

The Star Cuts copyright was bought by Jeff Graham from Fred Van Sant's estate. He republished the set before he died. I bought my set from Jeff. I assume his estate still holds the copyright but I don't know whether the set is still offered for sale. I would check with Jeff estate

Thanks Tom, I don't suppose you would have an email address for Jeffs estate?

Last I knew, Jeff Graham's books were being sold by Silver Supplies in Tucson http://www.silversupplies.com and The Rock Peddler http://www.rockpeddler.com

Easier to contact than the estate, most likely.

I love van sant designs.. he never sequences anything so you need to replay it in gem cad and adjust and number accordingly.. I don't know how he did it, but they are great!

Most of the FVS Star Cuts designs in series 1-4 are now up on www.facetdiagrams.org website as "open" designs, meaning that you can download the Gemcad files with cutting instructions.

BUT.... as I have heard, many of Fred's work have CAMs that are not included in what is online. The CAMs setup the cuts.

I am currently cutting FVS-169 downloaded from the site. I did not download the electronic file, just the pdf. The CAM preform info was included as part of the description for the pavilion facets that ultimately use them. Don’t know if the others are the same, but it wouldn’t hurt to look.

I later had to input the info into GemCad to re-sequence the tiers into something resembling a meet-point design. CAM worked well.

True, there are many notes in the print version not on the website. I bought a print version 6 years ago when supply was scarce and future availability was uncertain. I hope that the issue of ownership of the copyright to the print version has now been resolved and print versions of Fred's designs will continue to be available to those who value them.

Thank you, Tom and others, for the kind words about Fred Van Sant's designs. My good friend, Charlie Moon, who passed away a year ago, often expressed his sorrow that Fred's works were passing into oblivion. I was able to purchase the rights to Fred's copyrighted publications from the Jeff Graham estate earlier this year and have been slowly posting the GemCad files on facetdiagrams.org. I am also making his StarCuts volumes 1 through 6 along with 122 additional designs available in PDF format. I started out charging $20 for a cd, but found a site that I can use to send the files electronically and am charging $16 for that method. If you are interested, please send me a private message and we'll go from there.

Thanks again for your interest,
Keith Wyman
