Quite an interesting design. I hope you don't mind, I took the liberty of rounding off the indices and constructing a makeshift pavilion in GemCad. I'm sure you can construct a better one. Please take the time to finish this one off and don't forget to put your name on it. Hopefully someone will take the time to try it out and if it performs well perhaps add it to the Gemology Project. http://gemologyonline.com/Piazza_Campidoglio.pdf Cheers, GR
I should explain: I never got around to a pavilion as I was thinking of doing this as a rose cut in an opaque stone to use for a set of cufflinks. I actually hadn't thought about doing it as an actual gemstone. Also, I hadn't rounded the indexes as I was trying to see if it would possible to perfectly recreate the pattern from the piazza. Actually I had to make a few simplifications as the actual design in the piazza features several tiers of ovals then a few tiers of circles and then goes back to ovals. Pretty complicated. So, I guess there's no harm in simplifying the indexes.
I found a measured drawing in a book on Italian pavements which I imported into Adobe Illustrator in order to get the coordinates of the meetpoints. Then I worked it out in GemCAD which yielded the split indexes. I'd like to see if I can actually perfectly recreate the design with all the intricacies including adding some width to the radial lines (see the white bands in aerial view of the actual piazza).
Honestly, this was one of the first designs I've ever put together so I really don't know anything yet about optimizing designs for light return.
The piazza, by the way, was designed by Michelangelo.
Great idea ArsAntiqua to consider modifying the design for opaque material. I can just imagine how nicely it would scintillate in black spinel . It would be great to see your finalised design on this one and a few photos of the finished works. I hope you find the time to complete it

I would like to take the horse head and change it to a cow's head, Brown Swiss, but not very good at GemCad yet. I'm thinking about doing it in Citrine Quartz.
