Hello,
So i bought my graves 5 xl used off ebay. It came with a set of keyed dops, but i am not sure if they are the original ones that are supposed to go into the quill.
They are keyed , they have a small "trench" of a slit that run about half way up the dop.
I can post a picture if needed.

Problem:
The dops seem slightly too big for the quill. I can get them into the quill with no problem. However, when i go to take them out, they are near impossible to pull out, in fact i have broken off a stone a couple of times just trying to twist and pull them out.. I dont want to damage my machine, let alone break off my faceted rough.

Thanks for the help.

Have you tried cleaning the inside of quill as well as the dops? might not seem like much but it doesn't take much when tolerances are tight.

Maybe polish the dop shanks make them a bit "slicker"

Good luck, Jim

I have not tried to clean the quill yet...
I am thinking some rubbing alcohol and a q-tip?

any suggestion on polishing the dop shanks?

Thanks for the reply

Moyse_glass,
Those are not Graves dops, which have a 1.6 mm. hole in the side for a stainless steel pin. No side grooves. Graves dops have a shank diameter of 6.36 mm and are machined from brass or brass heads with 303 stainless steel shanks.

Thanks for the response.. Hopefully i haven't altered the interior of my quill by using these dops.. I will definitely be calling Graves Co. and hopefully will have better luck, than my attempt to acquire a new machine from him.

I just ordered some dops from Graves directly, haven't heard anything back in terms of shipping and its been about a week.

Does any one on here have any extra graves dops by chance??

I wish that I did. I hope you paid with a credit card or paypal. You may need to chargeback.

Graves dops are good quality. Please check the tracking number with the carrier.

And a quick clean for the quill is a q-tip with WD 40 on it. It does get gummed up and becomes mechanically tight over a period of time.

I bought my Graves 5xl from an estate - never used and the original purchaser had bought tons of extras at the same time. Anyhow, I had a couple of "size problems". One was that none of the laps wouldn't go all the way down to the turntable. I ended up taking a piece of emory cloth, turning on the machine and sanding a little of the arbor/spindle. The other problem was like the original post - dops getting stuck. My first dop got stuck so badly I was afraid I'd break the quill. Anyhow, I had a bottle of dawn dishsoap on my workbench for tumbling so I use a little of that on the dops and it helps a lot. Both of these problems lead me to think Graves has some issues with tolerances in their machining process.

And that is a tragedy.

That seems a bit strange to me. The base is the same one Graves has made for years, and I never heard of laps (with 1/2" hole) not fitting, unless something has been damaged. Also, if the dops fit after being treated with soap, they should fit without soap, unless you think the soap shrinks them ;-)

Clean the dops and the quill. I use a .25 caliber pistol cleaning kit for the quill.
