I got a flyer for a "Police unclaimed and seized assets" but it also says not affiliated with any Gov office.
It is also in a hotel.......
so I suspect a scam.
It has listed -"GIA Colombian Emerald ring" - GIA 10 ct Yellow Diamond Ring" - GIA Diamond and Ruby Ring
They have a short preview period.
so the question:
1) Is there a way to verify the GIA certifications before I bid anything?
They also have a 1000 bill, which makes it even more suspicious. I figured if it were a police auction the 1000 bill would be turned into the treasury since they are pulling them from circulation.

Why not ask the local police if it's legitimate?
Good suggestion.
I googled the name of the people doing the auction, there were several posts from people who bought things and tghen had them appraised, for 1/10 price they paid.
There were also comments about fake certificates, and Autgraph certifications from 2 organizations, one of which closed it's doors after complaints, and the other is not accepted even on ebay (either is the first one) ...
After reading those comments, I did not even bother to go, it is a scam.
My daughter did find a real police auction, but my daughter is not feeling up to going to it today.
Thanks for your reply.
I have a second question but I may post a new thread.

A friend of mine brought me a few months ago a diamod he bought in such an auction, in Hawaii, some 10 years ago. Claimed to be police and customs confiscated items. It was a 1.84 pear shape , Included white diamond. It came with a certificate from...AIG. Evaluated at 17,000 $. He paid 8,000 and felt lucky.. Needless to say that stone worth not more than 2,500$.

These types of auctions have been around for quite a while. Most are traveling from town to town. I would imagine that would limit there responsibilities in there minds. Not a fan either. Greg
