I made some canvas prints of some historical faceting art and had several people who expressed interest in them, so I made a page so you can see them.

15 designs to choose from, collected from the archives of history.

I am bringing them to Tucson!

Merry Xmas!

So you're selling someone else's artwork?

I suspect that any copyright on these has long since expired, if it ever existed. Selling reproductions is perfectly legal if there's no intent to defraud. Same as selling a book with reproductions of famous paintings.

The public domain is a beautiful thing, though I think it is a bit tacky to put your own watermark over someone else's work even if they are long dead. They do look nice though and I'll look forward to seeing them in person.

Moot point here anyway. Just a guess but probably printed in Thailand, will be carried over to Tucson by hand sold and then will return back. That would be a nightmarish legal under taking even if it was intended to be fraud on a copyright.
Not a lawyer just a thought on this subject.

Stephen, what "watermark" are you referring to? The one on the website? It's clearly stated that there is no watermark on the actual prints.

Justin is obviously not claiming that these are the original works. He's just making prints of famous works available to anyone who wants to enjoy them without traveling to a museum. No different than buying a print of Whistler's Mother from Wal-Mart and hanging it on your wall, or a book of masterpiece prints for your coffee table.

I'm out. This is silly.

I am aware of that, Al. I meant under any circumstances, including making previews of prints. It is not at all a legal issue (everything here is perfectly legal and Justin is doing good work on it) just a matter of personal taste.

I appreciate everyones concern. I am not intending to defraud anyones copyright. Most of the images are 100-500 years old and are very rare. There are no copyrights on any of these images.

I only put the watermark on the site because I put a lot of time into finding these images, restoring them, cleaning them up, blowing them up to 300 dpi, etc. I didn't do all this work to make money on selling them, but for the book on gem cutting that I am currently writing. I made a few prints for my own studio and showed a picture online and several people messaged me because they wanted the same, so I thought I would offer the art for their studios or homes too at a low cost.

I think it's a good service because having these prints made for yourself in the states would cost something close to $60 plus all the time it takes to clean them up for printing. And I am delivering them to you in Tucson for free so I think it's morally good on all levels.

Do you know where you'll be set up yet?

I'll be at the Faceters Frolic most of the time plus one or two days of walking around (my girlfriend has never been to Tucson) and also the AGTA show on on the 3rd because I'm giving a talk about the history of Gem Faceting in the morning. But after dinners, I might be able to go visit people if they've ordered a print. :D
