Here's my 7-year old cutting his first stone!

He dug up the rough himself (aussie yellow labradorite) and picked out a simple square barion design for his first attempt.

I helped him get the initial point centered but everything else, including polish, he did himself ..very slowly and meticulously. The stone isn't perfect (whose first stone is?) but he is SO proud to show it off.

I know the San Fransisco Gem and Mineral Society offers cutting instruction for kids. I bet other clubs do as well. :D
