Sidebar. I have known Gene for a long time. He wouldn't misspell someones name to be snarky. Not his style.
Lapidary is an art. Every artist has a unique way of approaching their medium. Whatever the approach is, as long as it works and the results meet their expectations, it seems unfair to question their methods.
The original issue was a member having "difficulty polishing a sapphire". Is it possible that the problem is a result of the characteristics of this particular sapphire? Of course.
It is also possible that we are not on the same page with the meaning of "subsurface scratches". In my opinion, it is an oxymoron.
So, my point is: Knock off the attitudes! If you want to sling insults, please, abuse your immediate family members.

To help the original poster, we have to first look at common issues that can produce the problem he describes. The peculiar issues are rare, but after following the suggestions, if the OP still observes the same problem, then most certainly he has a badly strained sapphire that would require an annealing process to correct, outside the scope of gem cutting. Describing the theory underlying a practical suggestion serves didactic ends. Science trumps religious belief.
