I recently upgraded from the Polymetric OMF to the UltraTec Fantasy machine.

The fantasy machine came with a set of slitting tools and three sets of mandrels. Each had a copper, phenolic and maple tool. I am familiar with copper and phenolic. But am clueless with respect to the maple.

Can someone enlighten me as to where the maple fits into the order of cutting? What is it used with (Oxides or diamond)? Any specific quirks for its use?

Thanks

I use the maple mandrels for final polish. The wood holds the diamond well, and I find these wood mandrels to be very efficient.

How did you mount your Gem Master on the machine?

Thanks. Will give that a try with a set of new mandrels next stone.

UltraTec now has an adapter for the GemMaster. It is among the options on the price list for the fantasy machine.

I accidentally found out about it via a Facebook group. Mine was the first left mast version. And likely only the second Fac-Ette they have done.

In order to make sure that all things fit right they wanted the mast/protractor/quill units at the end of the manufacturing process. Also, they used the post from the old OMF.

I really wish UT would pick up a few things from the GM II like the strain gauge, the feature that if you let go of the quill it stays put, doesn't swing down, and put a cut out in the splash pan rather than that silly method of bending the front of the splash pan down. Those 3 things and they would have a really great faceting machine.

Here is a photo showing how UltraTec adapted their fantasy machine for the GMII. I believe the idea was to leave it so it could still be used with their faceting machines as well.
