Hi
How to easily remove/detach a stone on dop which is attached via epoxy.

Should be easy used when transferring via transfer jig.

Epoxy is easy: wrap the stone and the new dop in a wet paper towel, then heat the dop you wish to remove by the stone with a micro butane torch while applying a little pressure upward on the end of the dop. It should pop right off in 5-10 seconds.
For Super Glue and UV glue (my personal favorite right now), wrap the glued portion of the dop you wish to remove all the way up to the stone in a strip of paper towel. Soak the paper towel in Acetone once every 2 minutes. After 10-15 minutes you should be able to pop the dop right off.

*Use the second method for heat sensitive stones.

I do the first dop using wax. Cut the pavilion then transfer into a cone dop with epoxy. For years I used wax and wax, but with smaller stones especially sapphire, at times the stone would generate enough heat to shift in the wax, so about 10 years ago switched to wax and epoxy.

Since the first dop is wax, just some quick heat on the dop after transfer and the wax softens and the the dop come right off.

To remove the stone after the crown is finished, I heat the dop which is now epoxy, and after about 15 seconds the stone can be pulled out. Normally there is some epoxy still on the stone, but it’s lost most of it’s grip from the heat and you can peel it off. At time an exacto knife helps with this.

I have never had a stone shift or come off the dop using this method. Removing each dop is a matter of seconds, no soaking, freezing, boiling water or other witch craft needed.
