Hello everyone.
Newly registered member on here. I have been lurking here for a few months picking up a lot of great information as I teach myself how to facet stones.
Here is my first fully faceted gem . It is a 3.42ct orange opal variation on M. Huynh's Pillow 125. Cutting on an old Raytech-Shaw faceting machine I bought from the wife of a jeweler who had passed away recently. I am a goldsmith/ jewelry designer/ hand engraver and I am very excited to use this stone in a new piece.
I am excited to learn, cut more and get to know all of you.

Thanks JX. I just dopped a piece of Lindi garnet and I won't have a chance to cut on it for a few weeks because of my schedule with shows and traveling. I can't wait to see what it looks like when it is cut. It seems a little dark as rough but I have so much to learn about evaluating rough.

I thought I would put this stone up as a way of putting it to bed. I found it a very unforgiving cut that at some stages wanted to suck my 'Heart and Soul'. And now it's blown up in all it's glory I can see it's not quite right. Anyway 7ct lab created sapphire.
'Heart and Soul'.
i concur completely....nice work on a very tough pattern

On dark garnets you can have a shallow crown and wider table to bring out the color. Maybe 25-30º. Some of the more experienced cutters here may provide a better suggestion. also cutting closer to the critical angle will help in the pavilion area.

Thanks Stairman and X.Jungere. Cutting it this size really didn't leave much to play with. The finished depth was 7mm which doesn't leave much room in a split boule to cut the preform and a stone of that depth It was a good challenge. Can't wait to cut it again

I really like this Pyrope Almandine Garnet I just finished cutting. It came from Idaho and I got it from directly from the miner at the Tucson show. Cut in Patrick Dubuc's Ètolle de France design. 1.25ct
