animan,

Looks absolutely gorgeous. Put that in the win column and get ready for the next one. One more suggestion, take a cup of coffee and a notepad (or just mental musing), and thing about everything that went well and didn't. You have entered a hobby (and some of the members here are winning awards and making money), that you'll never regret.

Glad I could help, but all I did was tell you all the mistakes I *still* make and what to watch out for.

Congratulations once again and dop up the next one :)

[quote="bobsiv"]I haven't had much time for cutting recently, but now that I'm furloughed I'm back at it! No sign of end to the shutdown so it's a good thing I have a lifetime supply of rough hoarded away. Here's a few, there are several more that I haven't photographed yet.

Chrysoberyl, 1.32 carats, Graham's 'Nigerian Cushion'

oh my word Bob, beautiful gems but the Chryso is drop dead gorgeous! =D>

mehoose,

I have to agree. That shines like an oncoming freight train in a tunnel.

Three Cornish cassiterites (tin oxide), 9.31 ct, 25.31 ct and 12.78 ct, for a private collector. There is a sulphide inclusion in the smallest stone, and most of the bright spots are pores.

Not quite a colored stone, but no other place to post it.

Stoichiometric Lithium tantalate in a barion cushion, with the c axis parallel to the table. This stuff is the king of pyroelectricity, generating up to 200 000 V from 40-50 degree celsius change in a 1 cm thick piece.

This material was from a piece meant to be used in a tabletop neutron/x-ray source, but was damaged and now sits in my rough container. It also has uses in nonlinear optics research and making acousto-optic modulators.

It's overcast so Ill have to wait to show you guys the ludicrous dispersion it also exhibits.

I've been cutting more softies - rhodochrosites recut from a small batch of broken stones I acquired over twenty years ago. Polishing was a bit of a struggle because of the numerous cleavage directions. Some facets still have a bloom of fine scratches because trying to polish them out only made them worse. The ‘pink’ stones are 0.65 ct; 0.68 ct; 1.46 ct; and 0.96 ct. The ‘red’ stones are 1.39 ct; 1.66 ct; and 1.71 ct.
