Lovely cutting Marco! Mexican Fire Opal does that color best - like warm embers!

The color of these opals can be amazing. This one has some more yellow-ish reflections that I could not capture. Really a little ember (too bad it isn't burning that lint on the table...).
Too bad for their looow RI, any design with a table is bound to be optically disappointing, somehow. I'd like one day to find a nearly spherical nodule to cut a Markoh-i-noor with Mex opal... :D

Anyway, opals can display some amazing and different colors, isn't it? We have seen a few nice examples lately.

Summer has flown by and it feels like th4e only faceting I have done was a result of demonstrations at another local club show. As usual, these were finished after the show so I could add concave facets and experiment.

The first is a 9.81 cts. lemon citrine that is 12.4 mm. across.

Next is a 6.12 cts. prasiolite quartz 11.6 mm. round. For this one, the crown was shaped into a dome before a few flat facets were placed on it.

And of course, I had to include hexagons. This lemon quartz gem is 12.2 mm. wide and weighs 7.16 cts.

This is another citrine at the other end of the color range. It is 2.39 cts. and 8.6 mm. across.

I had noticed that this board has seemed quiet lately. I had not realized how long it had been since I had posted anything here. I have excuses, mainly that I had cut a fair number of smaller stones and have not learned how to get decent photos of those. But that isn't all. So here goes.

First two are more experiments with the fantasy machine in smoky quartz.

This one is 11.92 cts. and 13.5 mm. across. The next one is 7.56 cts. and 13.1 mm.

Then there are a few of the greens that I got during Tucson in February.

Arizona peridot. The one above is 3.29 cts, 9.3 mm. The one below is 3.07 cts., 8.1 mm.

And then there is a 3.30 cts., 9.3 mm, chrome diopside.

One more, because it is a traditional December birthstone, a blue zircon - 1.88 cts., 6.8 mm.

Hi Mary

Your stones look great! =D> I love that blue zircon, and judging by your two smokies, you seem to be doing well with the Fantasy machine.

Thanks for sharing!

nice stone Justin, Hard to get Moldavit in faceting quality. Mostly with the rippled surface it is impossible to tell how they look inside.

Lavender Quartz in Bob Keller's Bar Round I.
Occasionally I'll get red flash show up due to the Tyndall effect redshifting an extreme light path. Been seeing a lot of the Tyndall effect lately.

Hi Shifter

That's a beautiful and interesting stone! I don't know lavender quartz - is it a kind of rose quartz or is it lab grown?

With the amount of scintillation this design shows I'll definitely be cutting more of these. And lavender quartz is yet another product of heating amethyst - there's a thread here that discusses it.

The holidays did not leave much time for faceting. Got only a handful of additional gems cut in the last month from the material purchased last February in Tucson. Hopefully now that the Christmas decorations are all put away for another year there will be more time in the next month to catch up a bit. Since there are about three dozen left from the 2019 material it is unlikely all of it will be cut before the end of January and I head off to Tucson again.

Meanwhile, here are three from a parcel of nice, dark orange citrine. Initially the parcel was purchased to try out concave facets on some smaller sizes (8 to 10 mm.) After trying for a few, at least in the lighter colored material, it does not seem to be worth the extra effort. They are a bit too small for the optical effects of concave facets to make a significant difference.

The first is a 2.58 carat, 9.0 mm round which has some concave facets on the pavilion. As usual, it looks a lot better in real life than is this photo.

And last, a 2.03 carat octagon which is 8.2 mm. across.
