It is with great sadness I'd like to announce Dr. Hanneman passed away on December 12, 2020. His legacy will live on forever!

Nice gems, TheL! Recovery rate will come with experience...

I got the $80 Gem Zoom that goes on your cell phone - not perfect, but a ring light and macro lens together for a reasonable price. Just need a cell phone with decent camera resolution. I have pictures on the "before and after" thread, and a nice heart sunstone on the design request thread.

At Gesswein and Rio Grande among other places.

https://www.gesswein.com/vsearch.aspx?SearchTerm=gem%20zoom

https://www.riogrande.com/searchresults#q=gem%20zoom&t=products&sort=relevancy&layout=card&numberOfResults=36

Until you want to spend the $$$$'s to get something better...

Thank you JCD and abeck, I will look into that phone ring/lens combo. Sounds like a good quick solution.
And I was lucky that those tourmalines didn't crack on me which is usually the case.

Here is my latest one. Had posted a thread on lapidary/ColoredStones a week ago showing pictures and asking for help on this inclusion and whether to leave or remove. At the end I left it. Happy with the result. Inclusion is very well hidden to the naked eye, and will be more hidden when setting the stone (prong will cover a lot of it).

Portuguese oval.
Pyralspite Garnet (Mahenge). 1.8ct from 4.49ct rough. (not sure how I got it this high but will take it!)
Color shifter from pink to purplish Red.

My wife says she sees beige, burgundy and raspberry colours. Lots of dispersion and secondary and tertiary internal highlights with saturated hues within, which make it quite lively in sparkle and color. Love this design, my first portuguese cut. Was dreading it but actually not too bad apart from the extra time it takes. Also found out that if one facet is over cut then its a landslide problem for the rest of the facets! more so that other designs

I think its Very Nice Cut ,consider it's the first time you try this design , and I cannot see the inclusion you was worried about,so that's excellent!
in general, ovals are more tough to cut than most people think.

Thank you Dor,
The one good thing I got going that helps my cutting is unlimited time :P not that i have a lot of time, but i can take as long as I want to cut because am no doing it for money (yet)
This stone took 3 or 4 nights. When I know some of you cutters take just a few hours.

Glad to hear you agree the inclusion is hidden somewhat. You can clearly see it here:

I faceted a stone after quite some time I had to stop cutting rocks. A nice pink YAG, just to remove some rust from my skills. :)

(Apologies for the fingerprints...)

Thank you, Danielle. :)

I got really lucky. That piece of rough was laying in a junk box at our local faceting club. The threads all came from a central "V" point. I put that point in the culet and let the facets create their magic.

Happy faceting.

I cut this tanzanite the other day. A lighter tone stone, but a pretty color. Here's the stone after heating, and the image below is before heating.

6.075 ct.

I have to say, I am a fan of Precision Gems "signature Cushion' cut. It does great things on what would otherwise be a less desirable stone.

I got to admit again Precision Gems pics outshine most. Professional, perfect angles and reflections. Well done!

I got a lovely parcel of fancy Tanz the other day. It would probably heat to a more classic purple but I love the flashes of green and purple in the steely blue base colour.

1.53cts 7.08mm
