It's been a little while for this thread, but here we go again. Just got a parcel of cut stones back from overseas, including this stone. I posted the rough before in the Before the Dop thread, so I figured I'd best post the result.
It started out as a lovely 173 carat bicolor yellow/blue crystal from Nigeria (center stone). Some inclusions around the edges but (I hoped) a clean core. I'd wanted some of this stuff for a while--one of the more neglected varieties of topaz, a pure and completely photostable yellow without the gold tones present in imperial-type stones from Minas Gerias and without the browns of most warm-colored pegmatitic topaz. What more could someone with a nigh-unhealthy level of interest in topaz ask for?
I must say I'm very pleased with the final result. Just over 50 carats with a very nice pure yellow color. Variable amounts of blue creep in depending on the lighting and angle. Yeah, it's certainly not precision cut but it's a lively an lovely stone. (I'll see if I can get some better pictures of it though).

Resurrecting this thread because it was one of my favorites while it was active!
I picked up some really neat material last week, it's fluorescent hyalite opal from Zacatecas, Mexico ("electric opal" is someone's trade name for it apparently.) This stuff is kind of sickly yellow under incandescent lighting, but it fluoresces noticeably under natural daylight or fluorescent lighting. SWUV makes it fluoresce so strongly that it practically hurts to look at it, it just explodes.
Here's the rough, it forms in thin botryoidal deposits so I hear that large faceted stones are rare.
Daylight:
SWUV:
And here's the faceted stone, 1.62 carats, custom design.
Reflected daylight through a window, which attenuates the fluorescence:
SWUV:
This stuff should be a huge hit with the Pink Floyd Laser Show/blacklight poster crowd.

I always take some before and during pics, because the transformation just amazes me
The before & during pics, a cheap chuck of synthetic sapphire that I originally got to work in the diamond stick into my BATT, but I decided I liked the color too much for that...

It's cut in a Robert Strickland's OMNI Oval (1.33 L/W version)

My first sapphire, and only second oval - it has polish problems, meet problems, and assorted other problems
Is there a manual on how to put picture in-line without the enormous attachment box around them?
