Paul, nice job.
Being quartz and looking very clean a ultrasonic and or jewelry steamer is an option. Soaking it and some pressured air as well.

I already posted a couple of these, but this is most of my cutting from the last while (in the case for a harmonica, lol).

From top left, going clockwise (EDIT: I posted the pic upside down, so from bottom right, going clockwise)

An unfortunately included and poor saturation bicolour tourmaline... where I also accidently didn't cut the c-axis oriented facets deep enough to avoid colour mixing,

Lithium Tantalate barion cushion,

Pink tourmaline, pavillion only recut,

Green zircon,

Garnet (with a 1.72 RI) with a Superman's decal-ish outline,

Aqua with a pope-hat/motorboat outline,

Aqua (not a recent cut) in an elongated trillion

Good work - a great collection! =D>
I really like the ametrine rectangle too - in which design did you cut that?

Woops. This isn't even the off the dop thread. I need to have my coffee before posting in the morning

Martine: the design is Jeff Graham's classic (at least for faceters) Smith bar: https://web.archive.org/web/20120406110 ... hbar.shtml

Thanks - the Smith Bar is still one of the designs on my bucket list for cutting!

Is nobody cutting any magical transformations any more? Please share them with us!

I had a number of gems (mostly Oregon sunstone) to cut for a gentleman. Might as well help keep some action going on around here!

First was a green tourmaline nodule, 6.60 cts rough, source unknown. Cut in a 9-fold modified brilliant, ~2 hours cutting time, finished at 8.45 mm, 2.40 ct (36%).

Toss in another, the second cut was a 14 ct piece of Oregon sunstone, showed some schiller (or is that "shiller"?) which the owner wanted to have show.

Finished at 4.99 ct (35.6%) (bummer - just .01 under 5!) 20.02 x 7.79 mm, a mixed freeform cut the design for which was obvious in the rough... 3 hours cutting time.

Nice job!!!

With so much extra time on my hands here I should take some inspiration from this thread and get busy with a few stones that need some desperate transformations.

Greg

Not my work, but one of these was my piece of rough. (is that allowed to post?)

A parcel of Winza sapphires and how they ended up. I liked seeing how differently all their colors turned out. Quite a pain in the butt to facet, so I heard however.

Lovely color Emerald!
Can I ask, how do you avoid the dark residue from polishing (am guessing with oil as lubricant) to get sucked into all those little crevices in the emerald?
Or do you have them cleaned with acid afterwards?

cheers

I cut emeralds on a 1200 mesh sintered diamond bronze lap using only water, pre-polish on the outer band of an early production Gearloose Waterwing dual lap (also nominally 1200 mesh but it behaves as if much finer) and polish on the inner Greenway portion, again only with water. The Gearloose Waterwing is out of production but between Gearloose and Adamasfacet there are several water-only alternatives.

Nice sapphires! Would love to have that kind of rough - do have some pieces of the original Umba River stuff, from the 70's....

Another Oregon Sunstone up, started as an 8.01 ct rough with orange schiller.

Finished as 2.73 ct/6.06 mm brilliant square cushion - 34% recovery, 2 hours cutting.

For this one, I was fearful the schiller would kill brilliance, but the guy wanted schiller... Ended up the schiller gave it a shocking salmon color with quite the brightness. A little internal graining (diamond clarity term), but a nice gem!

By the way - all of these sunstones were mined at the Dust Devil Mine, 2017 or 2018 I believe.
