without the few neurotics messing things up, it looks like a great country indeed
Its such a shame that human life and culture get pushed aside for resource and geopolitical gain. Every country the world wide has its unique niche that makes them beautiful.
My own maternal grandfather was from Afghanistan. So I guess this makes me 25% Afghan! Anyway, whatever you people are saying is all true. All of that regain (including the northern areas of Pakistan as well) is very rich in minerals. For example, in every jewelry shop, be it in any city of Pakistan - You well always find items made from Lapis Lazuli, which is a Peacock Blue colored Opal like rock.
It is so abundant in the Afghan Province of Herat, that they even built a whole Mosque covered with Lapis Lazuli (way back in 1400 AD I think)!
Its a beautiful land indeed. By 2016 a third of all government revenue will come from the Ministry of Mines. So they are starting to utilize some of their wealth. The problem, as with everything here, is the security situation. The Ministry also just ensured 100% mine security for all mining tenders that are open for bid. This means they will be putting tens of thousands of ANA and other troops around mining sites. Afghanistan wont be fixed in 10 years, it probably wont be fixed in 20 but it has made huge progress in a lot of ways the past 10 years. But it still has a long road ahead of it. The true test will come in 2014 when ISAF pulls out.
