Had to buy it when I was making XS3's. That's the only way to force an old machine to work to fifty millionths-Almost the mechanical equivalent of an unnatural act.
Just used the DRO to measure crossfeed backlash. Out of the box with no adjustments, .0026". There is an adjustment for this to (giggle) improve it.

What is your opinion of that amount of backlash. Did they just leave the dogs loose?
It sounds higher than I would have expected on a new SB. Not that I have ever checked a new one.

I love my XS3!

Update: Currently awaiting the truck. Just bought a second one.

Its "New sister" is arriving today for the other location.

(A few days later) Arrived: Moved 12 miles, no injuries or damage, set up, leveled, and running.

There were a lot of goofy things with them. They were heavy for their output, but solid and reliable. Compression ratio was only 8 or so because of the cupped pistons. This was needed for the 5 PSI boost for the supercharged models. Yes, 5 mains.

Sounds wonderful, when I think of the great machine tool makers in this country that have gone bust or been sold overseas I could weep.

Yes, but when they made things that last fifty years, we will always have them around. That first SB Mod A is still producing. It was made in 1952, when my schoolhouse had a big picture of Eisenhower on the wall. There is no reason it would not run another fifty. And I have seen lathes and milling machines in use that used to be driven from steam.
