Just a quick note: my first paper (along with Dr. Allen Glazner at UNC) is publicly available as a preprint from American Mineralogist. The proofed, nice-looking version will be coming out in the February issue. We found some really interesting features in hornblende phenocrysts from Yosemite when we examined them on an SEM and an electron microprobe. No direct relevance to gems, but it does help point out that the old, simple models for how plutons form really don't explain a lot of what we see.
