Hi,

I'm not sure if this is the right thread... It is the closest one I found...

I'm looking for a rough (or exact - if possible) estimation regarding the number of people working in the gemological fields worldwide.
As I am familiar with the problem of defining a gemologist (different available education levels offered), I'll take estimation of GIA GGs and/or FGAs too.

Sounds like a Fermi question.
In my area there are about 1,000,000 people. There are probably between 10 and 100 GIA GGs in the area. (less than 10 that advertise appraisals, but there are some jewelry stores that have GGs working there.) This mean that in the USA, with 300,000,000 people there are roughly 300 times this, so between 3000 and 30,000. So I will estimate about 10,000 GGs in the USA.

I will be interested in seeing what estimates others come up with, as this is "back of the napkin".
