Dear Moderators and all others,

Please advise me on the courses that are available in SSEF. I am thinking of doing this course known as Scientific Gemological Course. I have experience in retail company as a residential Gemologist of 2 years since I finished my Gemology course from GIA.

Is there a definite "time" of experience before which I should do this course?

In future I definitely want to go ahead in the field of research and that is what motivating me to pursue this course. But the course is really expensive.

Looking forward for your reply.

Thanking you,

GemKing

Actually I had contacted them regarding the SGC course and they told it can be done by me. If I do this course of Scientific Gemology, I don't know how will it affect my practical career since for a few years at least I won't have access to advanced machines for which the application is taught in this course, unless I think I change my field frpm retail to research and lab works.

So then how will the Scientific Gemology course will benefit me while I am working in retail. Whether it will or not? and if yes then how?

Looking forward for your reply.

Have you already finished standard gemology courses? If not, you may be putting the cart before the horse.

Sorry, I skimmed.

No, I think unless you own the instruments this may be premature.

Anyone else have an opinion? Alberto, Mikko Bear, Farshid?

I didn't do the course so i cannot comment in deep. I can only guess by looking at the program and, man, there are LOT of things there. I think you can take the course even without having the tools but, well, if you do not practice those techniques, you would very easily forget them quickly and, maybe 4000 chf would be better spent in a more profitable way....... OTOH, as far i know, that course is the only one where you can really familiarize with the cutting edge advanced instruments available nowadays, so, for someone it would be worthwhile......

Dear Alberto and Barbra,

Thank you for your replies for my question.

I have second thoughts on pursuing this specific course from SSEF as of now but I am definitely looking forward to do it in the future.

I am continuing my education right now with the Continuing education programme of GIA and thinking of pursuing small diamonds course from SSEF in the near future since it will be much more relevant to my current job.

Once again Thank you guys!

Hello Everyone!

I finished the Small Diamond course last month and it was a nice experience. Got to revisit the small details which I missed while grading diamonds.

Information on synthetic diamonds was provided and the talks from the lecturer were informative and coming from years of experience.

The course was fast so I made sure to read the material at night and think of questions I might have and next day would ask about it.

The response that they gave were precise and helpful.

Thank you

Congratulations!
Glad you were able to go through the course, and prepare for it in advance, so you got the maximum knowledge out of it.

GemKing,

With the instruments outlined, you mentioned you had a hands on with them.
Was there any in particular you found to be easy to use, best result, quickly diagnostic?
