Nice gadget but not sound effective to gemology.

How much magnification power?
what about dark field illumination?
:?: :?: :?:

I'm staying for now with my loupe...

hi,

this forum section was intented for Discussion of advanced microscopic and related instruments which may (or may not) have a gemological application
for gemmo gears you must knock the next door...

It has a cellphone for a camera.

Its a piece of crap. How do people get grants for such crap.

On my other favorite forum www.photomacrography.net somebody mentioned a similar idea to list members, sticking(much better quality) auxiliary lenses on a cellphone to do the kind of work members of that lists do professionally and for serious hobby. Nobody replied to the post. The poster was a longtime list member and it's a very courteous list where if a newb asks a dumb question , someone will help them anyway and in a nice fashion. It is well moderated and the admins will not tolerate fighting nor rudeness. No reply is as close as it gets on that list from what I have seen.

Maybe such developments can help remote parts of the third world. But at least now it seems that a location where something like this might be useful, it probably does not have a cell tower yet. And I don't believe you could do much diagnosis with it. (When I got rolling on microscopy it was medical and biological specimens) Maybe a dermatologist could say , "yeah that's a melanoma , euthanize the victim." But the doctor at the remote location probably is better at doing such diagnoses without advanced equipment than the doctor that the cellphone picture would be sent to. Paternalism of the worst sort IMO.

Finally why use a cellphone when last week at sam's club I saw a twelve megapixel digicam the size of half a pack of cigarettes and it did have autofocus and optical zoom which cellphones don't or at least not the ones I have seen. (I do not shop for cellphones. I have never sent a text message. I have shot a few pix with mine and don't have a clue how to get them out of the phone) The camera was like $89.95 If an area is going to get cell service probably then the hospital will have an internet connection. (I claim no expertise in this area)

Finally, the laws of optics don't change because someone decides to do this kind of "research" You can buy an LED illuminated triplet loupe and have an exact copy of this nonsense that you can stick on your cellphone with hotmelt glue.

Cellphone cameras are kind of interesting, in a do-it-as-cheap-as-possible sort of way.

**Disclaimer: I am such a luddite, I don't even have a cellphone, much less one with a camera.**

In a cellphone camera, images are captured by a CMOS array, rather than a CCD array. CMOS is cheaper and requires less power and computing, compared to CCD. The drawback is that CMOS has poor image uniformity across the array, compared with CCD. That is one reason why cellphone photos always have that junky look to them.

The other interesting thing about a cellphone camera is that it doesn't use a lens. Instead, it has a pinhole... it is a pinhole camera! As I tell my students, it is a lot cheaper to poke a hole in a piece of plastic than to try to mount a little lens just right. But the pinhole is a bit big in order to let in enough light, which tends to fuzz things out. This fuzzy blurring is the second reason why cellphone photos look junky.

The third reason why you see so many blurry cellphone photos is that even with the large pinhole, the CMOS exposure time is much longer than the little "click" you hear when you push the button on an old-fashioned camera. Longer exposure + difficulty keeping hand absolutely still = blurry photo.

Pinholes do have one cool advantage over lenses... they have no "focus" distance... everything appears in the image at the same level of detail, no matter how far away. But letting in enough light usually involves a bigger pinhole, compromising the image detail.

Brian

When this modern world does finally wear you down and you get a cellphone you will discover that you really can't buy one without a camera. Mine is about four years old and when I got it I did not want a camera. This was as close as I could get to my old cell phone but it does have a camera in it.
Seems to be a pinhole with a little lens in it.

Maybe it is just a protective clear cover, or maybe it is a real lens? Things produced far, far away keep getting cheaper and cheaper.

:P

Ghehehe... nice shot doc!

Cellphones nowadays get great shots... mine has a 5MP cam on it and it produces wonderful images. Earthling showed me the macro stick-on lens which allows you to get real up close and personal with your subject. It's a really cool little gadget which works well...

Hi
Okay I have a Kodak playsport a little Camera looks like a Cellphone with a Macro-Lens ad on and a little 45x monocular attachment. As Tim mentioned and something similar as in Albertos post
So here is what you get freehand balancing, took me 2minutes!
First Picture is only to show you the size of the inclusion in proportion
