amazing. dunno if 30.000 psi would be enough to synthetize diamond, actually the nowadays used split spheres can reach more than double that value, for not to speak about the temperature It's a pity they wouldn't be able to open the internal chamber. neverthless an interesting funny gadget ciao alberto
The 30,000psi they mention is just a what if you applied 30,000 psi hydraulic pressure to the ram piston. They then speculate the two to ten million pounds of force that would result depending on the unknown ram pistons surface area. The load cell is a 200,000 lb unit. On my first job out of college I worked with a 160,000 lb ram but there were only two not four structural rods. 200Klb was probably sufficient for what ever it was the users of this thing were doing but it clearly can go much higher.
I was visiting with one of my lab mentore's last night who told me that it seemed likely to him that diamonds would get used as quantum computing elements because of the way that the nitrogen platelets could split electron spins. His own research is on that subject but using easier to make crystals. HIS mentore won a Nobel prize for Chemistry in 1948.

I was thinking this one over and I think that this is probably a sintering press used to make compacted "green" preforms for sintered products. Looks to me like it would be just about the right size and pressure to make some sintered faceting laps.
