This ebay auction caught my eye. It's a rather large green spodumene that the seller says has been 'coated'. Are they now coating spodumene like they are topaz???

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120033849302

I have written the seller asking about this but haven't heard back yet.

Hi Modo,

I still have not heard from the vendor. However, lol, much to my surprise I won the auction for $10.50! We'll see if they actually send it to me! :)

The nice thing about some of those eBay auctions is that they're SO cheap that pretty much no matter what you end up with you'll be able to do SOMETHING with it, even if it's just to use as a "teaching stone" to distinguish the real deal from ... well, whatever else it could turn out to be. :)

I have googled treatment for spodumene, kunzite and hiddenite but can't find any reference to coating. Does anyone have a clue as to what this might mean?

Probably that it is a relatively new treatment. Not entirely new since it is detected and disclosured by the seller. Or that the seller knows that the stone isn't entirely natural but with unsufficient knowledge of treatments to discern the exact treatment and therefore risking a guess at the, for him, most probable treatment done to the stone.

I wouldn't be suprised if it is a coating, since it seems to be a popular and still developing technique that I think we will see a lot more of in the future to come.

Just a note that I received this stone in the mail today. I was quite surprised that the seller actually sent it considering how little I paid for it.

I have written the vendor a second time asking about this coating. I never heard back from them the first time. It's quite a pretty stone. Very very large though, of very pale green. I paid in total about $18.00 for the stone, including shipping.

Have you tried to immerse it and see if it is a coating at all?
