Get a web host, SurpassHosting is a nice reasonable priced and great on CS host. Then use Fantastico in your control panel to install ZenCart. Then either create a theme, download and install a free one, or purchase a higher end one for it. Then set your store up and get your stuff on line. It can help greatly to use something like Wordpress + SEO plug-in as your main page in order to be very search engine friendly and gain rankings quickly, after you submit your website to them of course. Read up on SEO in order to do things properly.

Get the basic things below to get started.

Hosting: Any reliable hosting provider that can do most of the configuration things for setting up your site are automated these days and offer $/hr assistance if you're not so technically minded.

CMS (Content Management Systems) ie. Joomla, Wordpress, phpNuke, many others out there.

Getting an SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) done on your site can improve your monthly hits to the site, but ultimately your efforts and approach to selling is what will make you more successful.

Shopping Cart: You want something that is going to be Easy to use for your customers and secure so make sure your site is configured to using a secure protocal (https:) for when you're dealing with banking and personal information.

Unique Information: By this I mean you want to take the time to develop information that is unique to your website and quality information that search engine spiders will identify as you being unique. Using too many key phrases, bleeding between pages and cross linking that information will hinder your success to good website structure. Additionally you also want your pages to be Spider Search friendly. If the bots cannot read your site, your site will lacking being ranked in searches.

AND (deep breathe) lastly...

Information is key, quality, true information about the product you are selling. Full disclosure on all products and imagery that you produce should be the most real representation without software alterations of the product you are selling. (Obviously minus Scaling and Format changing for upload/download speeds)

An informed customer is generally a happy customer. They will intend to feel more secure about their purchase if they are happy with what they see. Especially if you are dealing with an item that is soley based on its appearance such as Gemstones.

You might also want to look into selling on etsy. It's got a lot of traffic, and fees are pretty reasonable.

Hello,
Alibaba is easy and could have great result. You just have to create an account and then add your products in it... quite simple but the result is good also... You can even use the free membership of alibaba.

VirtueMart also is great as you can create your own shop online.

Good luck!

In my opinion, try selling on Etsy and eBay first to get a 'feel' of selling online and then later make your own website, too... Good images of your gems are very important to sell the goods...

Actually it is better to have your own website first, THEN use Ebay and Etsy to sell, essentially advertizing your website. That way if don't sell on Ebay or Etsy it was NOT a total waste.

Also, do NOT pay someone to SEO your website! ZenCart is pretty well optimized as is. Wordpress simply install the SEO add-on and do it yourself by filling in the blanks. Also a really nice shopping cart available for Wordpress as an add-on that works quite well. When submitting to search engines always use DMOZ as well as it will go out to many!

Actually installing SEO plugin and filing fields there is only the beginning of SEO, to get on top and stay there requires hard work and many programs like Market Samurai etc. Sure you can do it yourself but it's never ending process if you want results, so for many it may be better to actually pay someone to do it. Also I have to say, making the website by yourself if you are not programming savvy and SEO aware will likely result in it having a big number of SEO related errors that wouldn't even be visible at site as such, they would just effectively prevent your ascention in search engines. I don't even want to go into such details as choosing words for promoting your website, as they may not be what you would think by yourself at first... In the end all I'm trying to say is- SEO with serious approach is not as easy as it seems.

On the other side of the coin...Make your photos as close to the actual appearance as possible. No enhancement, so the buyer get what they see. If I find a buyer that has close to exact photos, I will continue to buy from them. I buy from some dealers that has stones that appear lesser in photos than competitors, but I know what it will look like when I get it, and I can bid accurately. Once you get buyers following you, it is much easier as reputation spreads.

In that respect I like to make my photos impressive, which doesn't mean enhanced [-X but clean, big, sharp etc. Often when I scour the net I find gem sellers whose pictures wouldn't even tell you how included the stone is, just so small and low resolution.

Kane: as a consumer, I couldn't agree more. I will open up a sellers offerings, and if they are not well photographed or are not enlarged but are tiny images, I close it and move on.

Thanks Minx, of course on big pictures all stones look more impressive but that's just the size, with opals it's another matter that if I'm doing photo session I'm gonna choose better ones to publish, not sure if anyone wants to blame me for this... Actually the only time I altered colour was with one stone when blues were for some reason overblown out of proportion, so I had to take them down.
