I give up! Since Garnet was already listed - that rules out all of the garnet family. Since it's a rare stone - that rules out Quartz and YAG, and we've already listed:

Well, I thought so too, but then I saw where Cattrix posted "Garnet" and that pretty much covers it. Wouldn't be Grossularite as that includes Hesssonite. Could be Almandite - but that's not a rare stone. Who knows....?

Some really good guesses, but not yet. I think this shows the importance of having a reference with all the possibilities (can I say that?).

There are many possibilities - images are difficult without at least an R.I. or one point of reference (unless I'm missing something crucial in the image - shudder!)
