Just cut my first rhodolite, this is in 'Off the Dop' also, but it really cemented my affection for cutting garnet so I'd thought I'd add it here too. I usually don't like dark stones, but with the high refractive index even saturated garnets can be really killer with the right design. 4.93ct, Jeff Graham's 'Vampire'.

i am working on my first rhodolite garnet. what do you use to polish these stones. i tried working up to 100000 dia. and still get scratches & some specks. am waiting for some aluminum oxide for darkside lap. your help is requested on this.
Per Jason's request, here is my ring. I like the ring. I had originally purchased it inexpensively because its original stone, a tanzanite was chipped. The chip was on the girdle and most folks just casually looking at the ring wouldn't even notice it. I did find out quickly how it probably got chipped because one of the prongs caught on my shirt and easily pulled away so the stone dropped out. I had it retipped and the jeweler had one of the prongs very close to the chip so it was even harder to notice. Later since I already had another tanzanite ring, I decided I would have a cc garnet I had put in it. I tend to be hasty sometimes, so mismeasured the stone's size as 7x5. The jeweler mentioned he thought it might be a bit small but still could be done. You can see the stone looks a little small for the setting. I of course then realized the tanzanite was closer to 7.5 by 5.5. The cc garnet is pretty dark so when I saw the malaya color shift garnet Jason posted which was closer to 7.5 x5.5 I went back to the jeweler and had it put in instead. I find it hard to distinguish the color change by just changing the lighting, but at work at a certain time of the day, the sun comes in just right and the flourescent lighting produce a half and half effect so I can see both colors at the same time and then easily see the difference. Sorry about all the lint (and a cat hair), I didn't notice it when I took the photo, but noticed it tonight when I FINALLY got around to pulling the photos off my camera and cropping them.
