I saw this forum and figured why not! I just recently started gem collecting and currently I'm just working on finding reasonable and trustworthy sources for gemstones. Right now I've been looking mainly at semi-precious stones since most precious stones are out of my budget for the time being.

I have very little background in the actual buying and selling side of gemstones, but as far as mineralogy is concerned I'd say I'm rather decent. I'm a graduate student studying igneous petrology so I'm well versed in geological equipment, terminology, etc. I've done some faceting and a fair bit of cabbing before, but mostly I'm just hitting rocks with a hammer and mapping.

So, hello all, and if anyone has advice on a good resource for (preferably untreated) stones be sure to let me know!

Welcome!!!
All nice gems are precious stones, I find the term semi precious evil and degrading :)

agree, and when the "gemological materials" law will be effective here, the use of the therm "semiprecious" will be prohibited. :D

Welcome! Nice to see more Canuks on board.

And yes...I cut my stones and they are certainly precious. No "semi" about it

Cheers

Lisa

Yikes! Perhaps I should have defined them as "high crustal abundance relative to demand (with the exception of diamonds)"?
