This incredible Sapphire was sourced for a customer by a local high end jeweller. They needed an 8 carat 'perfect' stone to satisfy their customer and this is the stone they selected........but!
The need for 8 carats was because 8 is a very lucky number however when the stone was put on the scale it measured 8.14 carats. Horror of horrors, no number is more unlucky than 14, it means guaranteed death in the customers belief.
My customer, the jeweller asked me to remove 1 point in order for them to complete a rather important sale.... I went to my favourite diamond dealer, his office is next door, and weighed it. 8.147 cts. Actually took me a couple of times to get it below 8.14, first attempt gave me an 8.142...grin
Tony. Who has to admit that getting to play with stones like this gives me a bigger grin than cheques in the mail, hard part is not letting customers know I'm having huge fun at their expense.

It's good your customer wasn't a Satan worshiper, or you would have been asked to add something to the stone, to get a 8.33 ct. one. That is 1.666 grams! The sapphire of the Beast.
Maybe I should start cutting such stones: Customer: "What is this?" Marco: "It's a hell-fire red spinel in a pentacle design. It weights 0.666 carats" Customer: "How much does it cost?" Marco: "It's only 50$. AND YOUR SOUL!!! BWAHAHAHA!!!!"
