Hello. Does anyone know where a strong magnet (such as the Hanneman- sp?) can be purchased? Also, are there any other portable gem tools that can be used to aid in evaluating synthetic diamonds?
Thank you, Katy B

I've purchased from these guys before, so I can vouch that they're legit. Pretty good prices too, if you compare to the competition.

Folks,

Lee Valley has a variety of sizes, shapes and strengths. For example:

Do a search on magnets. Some of these are the type you don't want to get near a pacemaker, etc.

Lee Valley is in the class of LL Bean s a great place for customer service.

a good rare earth magnet can be quite destructive.. vhs tapes, cds, computers, dvds, pacemakers, and other items can be damaged... i am not an authority on this but some the the new high teck stuff definitly can be affected... we were setting ipods on our laptop computer to get the serial numbers and model etc, and the magnet in the speaker that we set it on in the computer was hurting either the recordings or the settings on the ipod.. a rare earth magnet is very strong much stronger than a regular magnet.... i have one and i could push about any cheap diamond around in the sink on a styrofoam boat.. the dust on , or inclusions in the diamond made them pushable with the rare earth magnet.. i still think it could somewhat interupt the blood flow in my hand when i held it tighty.. it could be my imagination but tell me what you think when you get one.. dont know what it would do to an airport xray machine tho.. dont get your hand between two of them, they may be quite stubborn, .. ... dave.

This sounds quite disturbing! Could they be some of those colorless synthetics that are not supposed to exist ?

I can offer an idea where a good, very cheap source of these magnets are. Old computer hard drives contain two of them as part of the head stepper motor assembly. Simply take the cover off. Sometimes easier than said. You will find the rotating platters under. Look for the little prong thingys (scientific terminology) at the base of the prong thingys. You will find two very powerfull magnets there. I still have several stuck to my refrig sdoor that I can't remove. Be very careful not to pinch any sin or fingers between two of them. I have several friends teenagers that learned the hard way. These are NOT playtoys.

Samarium-cobalt magnets are also used on high tech electric motors.

Dave, I suspect that these were the source of your ipod issue, not the speaker magnets. No special effects on xray, though.

Thank you for all your replies. I appreciate the information.

Dave- thanks for the advice and warning!

Valeria- it was funny to see your response because I was just looking at some old posts of yours about synthetic diamonds on another forum!

Take care, everyone!

There are some new ones too; the subject makes fascinating gossip...

The common statement that it isn't profitable to make colorless diamonds in the lab has always sounded a bit bogus to me. After all, these are in greatest demand and would make realistic jewelry, not the unusual colors no one expects to ever see in flesh. That no one 'wants' to make them widely available sounds terribly bogus... don't you think?

Oh well... aside this, I am not much of a conspiracy theorist ;)

Another source, THESE GUYShave them in quite a variety of shapes. They also sell pocket geiger counters if that interests anyone.

Actually, they look to have a bunch of stuff that might be of interest, UV and IR lights, flashlights and penlights (maybe not the correct wavelengths to be of any use) etc.

Once everyone has their magnets, you can have some fun experimenting with these gems.
