WARNING - For hard core professionals only!

The ALL NEW MACRO EYE 2000™

No more need for a loupe or low power microscope, just straight up 10x magnification WITH YOUR EYE!!!

Heh... 8)

My left eye is a bit of a runt. A chronic iris infection since my 14th, cataract at 21 and the ever present 'floaters' have caused my brain to label the input coming from that runt as 'second rate' and 'marginally important'. I do most of my viewing with my right eye with which I see like a hawk.

About two weeks ago the runt shit itself completely. A new patch of fuzziness was floating through my vitreous humor (I really like the English translation of that stuff) and I thought: "here we go again... now what?" I rang the ophthalmologist and booked an appointment. That appointment was to take place last Monday.

Long story short: diagnose: retinal detachment so instant hospitalization and surgery. The first round of surgery was a bit of a feck-up. The local anesthetic they injected didn't hit home properly so when the surgeon first stuck a needle in my eye I had to tell him that "I WAS FEELING A FECKING NEEDLE IN MY EYE!!" - "Woops, more anesthetics... you know what, let's knock him out altogether..." - "Good idea!" - A minute or two of running around by the anesthesiologists - Return of the surgeon: "Hey, where did that hematoma come from?" - "WHAT HEMATOMA?! - Apparently the eyelid spreader they jammed in there had hit a vein in my bottom eyelid and now, 5 minutes after starting the whole endeavor, the inside of my eyelid was growing into a monster big enough to obstruct the surgeon's view of the area he was planning to jam his probe in. That did it... "Attention all personnel, abort mission! Mr. Spauwen, we shall see you later! Go home and lay on your back for 4 days, don't move your head or you will go blind!"

Naturally, I wasn't impressed... :smt011

Fortunately, Friday was a different story and the whole thing went by without me noticing a thing. What they do with retinal detachment is the following:

1. suck your vitreous humor out of your eye (in my case a bonus: that gets rid of my floaters at the same time)
2. somewhat push the retina back in place
3. fasten the retina to the back of the eye with a laser (basically: burn it on there in a few spots)
4. Fill your eye up with a gas, the bubble acts as a 'pusher', it makes sure the retina is held up to the back of the eye for a week or two so that it grows back to where it belongs. I was told I wouldn't be seeing much until that gas bubble had diffused into my system and was completely replaced by fluid.

And here it comes: When I first opened my eye this morning, stuff was fuzzy indeed. Me being me I checked for a focal point and bang! At about an inch and a bit away from my eye I got one!!! I HAVE A MACRO EYE!!! Wooohooo!!!

I AM NOW HALF HUMAN, HALF MICROSCOPE!

Glad you are doing well Tim.
Sounds like the first attempt was done in a US hospital.
Will the eye continue to get stronger?
Does it have Darkfield capabilities?

Sorry I couldn't resist.

Speedy recovery

Harold

I think this qualifies you for a promotion in the army of Wild Zombies. Even I haven't tried to be a Bionic M400.

You are very lucky to live in a time when they can do something about these things.
(even when I was your age treatments for problems like this weren't so good)
Ophthamologists were among the first to recognize the utility of the laser. It continues to be useful to them even though many other surgical specialties have tried them and found them less good than other methods. But eye surgeons use them all through the eye.

If you had a cataract removed you could have them install a 10x intra ocular lens.
We will have one made out of a gem material whose highly refractive qualities will
make it miniature. A micro hastings triplet.

I am glad to hear they have matters under control. I wish you a speedy and uneventful recovery.

whoa Tim, that is unreal... some traumatic worrying worthy of a few grey hairs. I didn't even know that a retina could be re-attached. I wish you all speed healing.

Ah but I admit... a ten-times closer near point with its corresponding 10x angular magnification is pretty cool. At least for a little while... until you want to see the rest of the world beyond your nose.

A little while is what its going to be. My eye is flooding fast! Halfway there already. (Weird sensation btw... you actually SEE the water level in your eye and the slushing around as you move).

All this has given me lots of insight in the old eye. I never realized that the round ball, filled with gel (your vitreous humor), acted as a lens itself. Your whole eye is one big lens system (DUH!). Your actual 'lens' is the only thing accommodating in it all but the rest all has its function when it comes to bending the light. (DUH!) Never realized that before...

So a new concept in microscopy is born, liquid lenses. :)

Actually the guy who owns and operates www.surplusshed.com also has a company called Virginville lens company. He patented a lens which uses liquid silicone inside of silicone rubber membranes. By varying the pressure you can vary the curvature and thus the strength of the lenses. And some brands of intraocular cataract lenses are made of silicone rubber which allows them to be folded prior to insertion in the eye. He was awarded a US patent but I don't think he has ever sold it for any particular purpose. But he has quite a passion for lenses generally. He bought the residual property and trademark for the old Wollensak lens company of Rochester NY. He is a very bright and interesting fellow.
