I realize Burma is still incredibly corrupt and commits horrifying rights violations, and no, I would not buy any kind of Burmese gems yet. HOWEVER, what are the implications of this? Canadians can buy Burmese goods; will the Burmese government allow exports?

I don't even the whole thing.

According to PostMedia
"The United States, European Union and Australia all had moved to ease their own sanctions against Myanmar on Monday."
Only Non-economic sanctions were lifted, apparently in an effort to help oil exploration companies do exploration in the coastal waters. I would not be expecting a flood of burmese rubies to be hitting the market for a while.

According to the CBC, Canada has dropped all import/export/financial sanctions against Burma, and the only remaining sanctions are on weaponry/military items.

Still though, since we only have 35m compared to the US's 300m and the EU's 500m, yeah, I don't expect a flood of rubies or anything. Nice to dream, though.

Sanctions has nothing to do with helping people, corrupted government will remain rich and powerful and all pressure of embargo will be for the people.

With not buying any Burmese gems you do not affect the corrupt government at all but the small people who mine it and yourself! And the stuff that`s big money controlled by the government like Rubies and Jade are being easily sold to countries like Thailand and China where there is no embargo!

It's safe to say that I will not be buying directly from Burma, but the ending of the sanctions now means that I can buy Burmese goods from my suppliers in thailand. First order of business is going to be to see if I can obtain some of the alluvial white and green jade nodules that we used to be able to buy.

Hey George,
Is it legal already? Being an American I think I have to wait for the states to allow it but maybe the Thais can do it now? I have begun to stock up on Jadeite, including those snow and grass pebbles that I believe I used to ship to you, or at least we have talked about them years ago. I am having them cut into cabs for ring stones, eliminating most of the white color while centering the green.
I have been trying to watch the news and am sure I will see when it happens but then again I don't like reading news so I could miss it! Best regards, Lee

Hi Lee

I thought the states had joined in the ban lifting on Burma. Just checked it out and you're right they did not RSVP the party invitation. Most of the world Canada, the EU and Australia have lifted the bans on everything but military type goods. So unfortunately you and Dave are still victims of the ban.I'm sure you will have no problems selling the cabs but I will be looking for the nodules themselves.

Because of the ban a lot of us Jade freeks  have started using
..Guatemalan jadiete as a replacement for Burmese jadiete. Guatemalan jade is translucent (the good stuff) like Burmese. The unfortunate thing is that as it becomes more widely known the price is rising on the good stuff.

Hope all is well with you and yours

George
