i would glad to know your opinion on FLY diamonds as you all know Light Yellow In GIA Color Grading is from S to Z which Y~Z range is the most saturated in yellow,
The GIA's Fancy Grades Are:
• Faint • Very Light • Light • Fancy Light • Fancy • Fancy Intense • Fancy Vivid • Fancy Dark • Fancy Deep
Color Grading of Colored Diamonds is done only from Face-Up view.
so what does qualify a Light Yellow Diamond to fall into Fancy Grade or Y~Z.
IMHO the only difference between Y~Z and FLY is about how Cut of the diamond shows more color depth Face-Up.
Y~Z color Diamonds are beautiful as FLY Diamonds but there is big difference in their price.
In the Colored Diamonds grading there is no Faint/Very Light/Light grades for Yellow diamonds and i think there should be no FLY Grade too because they are actually the same color, only different is in luster from face-up .

hola Farshid,
agree on all what you said above, i would leave a little thought though..... Cape series are almost always affected by nasty greenish overtone in low grades, Fancy yellows usually can have that as a component but in not so dramatic way. Of course Fancy greenish yellows are widely available comparing to more pure yellows but their price, you know is FAR lower..... ciao albé

oh yes.. i saw a close-to-2 cts radiant reported as fancy light from a BIG lab and, surprisingly got an "S-T" from another BIG lab (i said surprisingly cos, as for my and not only mine experience, the lab who graded it "S-T" is usually "softer than the other one, if you get what i mean... )
i even saw a 6+ ct graded S-T by a BIG lab which was slightly lighter in colour than another 5+ cts graded M-N by the same lab............... nevermind Egor........that discussion could last forever............and i'm pretty sure you're familiar, as a working gemologist with such descrepancy aswell....

@Alberto Yep, those are Canary Yellow Diamonds and Canary yellow and orange colors are very common in type Ib diamonds which of course Type Ib itself are 0.1% of diamonds and very rare like IIb

not seen, i sold many, please note after N color (i have N color stone) GIA grades color as a pair range, like this: O~P Q~R S~T U~V W~X Y~Z
at the moment i have nice Round 3.19ct S~ T VS1 in my hand, if Brown is Overtone instead of Yellow some dealers call these type of stone as Champagne Diamonds C1 ("Light Champagne") : N,O,P,Q color C2 ("Light Champagne") : R,S,T,U,V color C3 ("Medium Champagne") : W,X color C4 ("Medium Champagne") : Y,Z color C5 ("Dark Champagne") : Fancy Brown C6 ("Dark Champagne") : Fancy Brown to Fancy Dark Brown C7 ("Fancy Cognac") : Fancy Dark Brown

Thanks Alberto , its also big diamond (2.21ct)
let's continue on our main topic.
the reason i have started this topic is because for consumers the "Fancy" word itself can be tricky. but in reality there are slight difference between X~Z and FLY color depth mostly same, if cutter decide for a thicker girdle then it make stone from X~Z to FLY! and a lower cut quality diamond can be sold as fancy!
