Hey guys,
I've been using a copy of the GIA reference guide at my school, and have decided that I'd like to (try) and get my hands on a copy... I've found someone selling a CD of the guide - apparently it is now out of print, and they're distributing it on CD?

Does anyone know anything about this CD - is it a collection of PDF's of the guide, or a program, or something different? I'm wondering if I could use it on an ipad, to be able to access it whilst in the lab. Any idea on what it's worth?

GIA combined the Gem Reference Guide and the Handbook of Gem Identification into the Gem Identification Lab Manual. It's a large (11.5x12-inch), hard-covered, spiral-bound book with helpful index tabs.

I don't think you can buy this separately. It is used in the week-long Gem Identification Lab class. If you have taken that class, you might call GIA and see if they will sell you one. If so, be prepared to pay a good amount. I'd say well worth the cost, whatever that is :P .

I can check on this tomorrow to see if we sell the Lab Manual individually. I do know that if you are enrolled in the Distance Education Gem Identification course, the book is available as an online .pdf as well, I'm just not sure if you can purchase it separately.

P.S. I found a used one listed on Amazon:

I am currently enrolled in the GIA Colored Stones course. I purchased the course materials, which included the CD for the Gem Reference Guide, which is the PDF book that they no longer print and sell. If you enroll in the course, you will have the opportunity to download the course notes and a PDF copy of the Gem Reference Guide.

After looking into this today, I found out that we offer the current Gem Identification Lab Manual for $125, and the Gem Reference Guide CD for $25. However, these are only available to purchase for currently enrolled or previously enrolled students of the Gem Identification course or lab class.

Very good information of all the stones. It is compact on cd. Some do prefer by book hard cover
