Diamond isn't soluble in acidic and alkaline solutions, with the exception of sulfochromic acid which can attack diamond. It is also attacked by molten potassium/sodium nitrate and by molten sodium/potassium hydroxide.

I don't know what a superficial chemical etching of diamond would look like, sorry. Neither do I know what color is the flame when burning a diamond, but I must admit I am curious
