hello all and thank you for allowing me to join. I am teaching myself silversmithing and lapidary arts and was able to acquire 590 pounds of different types of jasper and agate. This is one piece I have not been able to identify. it is beautiful. Im wondering maybe is it granite with ruby? I cant find anything anywhere like it on the net .. Josette

It's not possible to identify anything by a photo. One option is to take the piece to a local geology department for identification.

My best guess though is garnet in gneiss.

Thank you so much. Really appreciate it. I live on a island and am single disabled mom with disabled child whom I home school. Thus teaching myself everything. Closest geology dept , gemologist 70 miles from here. I really appreciate your time and your knowledge.

That's what I was going to say, but wanted to wait for two other people to say it first!

Yes, I think we can all agree those are some 'gneiss garnets'.

(Sorry for the pun... I couldn't help myself. I'm surprised at y'all's forbearance...)
