Good day,

I have received an old book that I ordered from England: " Gem Testing" ninth edition by BW Anderson, 1979. It is the last version that the author made before he died.

That book was recommanded by monsieur Hanneman. I am really pleased with it. That book seems to be a very good vulgarisation of the science behind gem evaluation. It will take me some weeks to read it.

Wel,l 2 weeks vacation in view. There will be skiing, playing in the snow with the children, watching good family movies, family games and reading that book.

I also found an another book that seems very good. It's goal is to help identify with spectroscope. That one is new and gives color pictures of gem specters: http://www.gembluechart.com/order.html. I think that it can be helpful. I might buy it later.

Have nice sunday afternoon

Brigitte

This is an excellent reference! Well organized and easy to use. I recommend it highly. No $ interest, just a satisfied user.

Don't bother with the bluechart.

Get the best reference and call it quits:

Hello,

Thank you madame Voltaire, I have not seen that book anywhere. I surely put it on my next things to buy list. :)

Hi to everybody!
Still I don't have the book Barbra and Alberto recommended, but I think it's very interesting as a consultation book for making a good analysis. I studied gemmology since 1990 on the Italian version of Anderson's "Gem Testing" (in Italian: Gemmologia Pratica), and I felt very well in reading it.
If I find (as soon as possible, hopefully!) the "Tables", I will buy and read that book, for sure!

Hello,

I bring back that old subject to speak about the recommandation of Barbra, well sustained by many of you.

Well, yesterday, I followed the link. I wrote ti the email address to give my address so I can have the global cost( book and shipping).

I have no answer so far. Is it normal? Do you know another place wher I could buy it? The only other place that I have found is Australia! I would prefer somewhere closer to Canada.

Good evening.

Brigitte

They'll get back to you.
Be patient.
You can even have the authors autograph the book for you!

Hello Barbra,

You were right again! I have received the answer today. I was answered by one of the author, monsieur Dedeyne. He told me that he will sign the book, as you said.

He also told me that I can write to him in french, so I did. I wrote him that his book has been recommended by you, seconded by others, on this forum.

Of course, the book's price is important. The total cost is almost $170.00 in canadian dollars. But you wrote it was the best!

Have a nice evening.

Brigitte

I find the Anderson book very clear and helpful, for more detail I go to "Gems" by Webster and Read. For spectroscopy my first port of call is "The Spectroscope and Gemmology" by Anderson and Payne. I find this an excellent and wideranging book with sufficient background to make it very interesting and informative. If I have a grumble it is that the spectra are shown in black and white rather than colour. I am toying with the idea of making a transparent overlay in the spectrum colours and the right size to fit over the spectra in the book (easy enough, photograph a spectrum, enlarge it to the right size and then print it on transparent film). I would need two. one for the spectrum as seen in a diffraction spectroscope, one as seen in a prism 'scope. An interesting project for an idle hour.
