Hi to all,

Today add a little ugly but rare mineral. I hope you enjoy it.

Thanks maialetto, but the aragonite not is an ultraviolet mineral :-(

This is true for perfectly pure aragonite (well, also pure fluorite is not fluorescent... :p ), but it is very easy for metal cations to enter the aragonite crystal structure (in trace amounts) and generate centers for UV fluorescence. I have collected myself some nice aragonite which is fluorescent in yellow, light blue and I have some with an orange color under LWUV.

Coralloid aragonite is often fluorescent in my experience and I asked since the blue tinge (likely due to Cu, as you say) is a hint that the stone grew in an environment rich in metals, and those often trigger some cool fluo colors under UV lights.

Anyway, put a piece of travertine under an UV light, you might be surprised... ;)

Yes Danielle,

If you press in the high resolution link, you can see in complete detail the cristalization:

High resolution: http://MacroRail.com/imagenes/ApiladoH0 ... _0_53x.jpg

The difficulty of photographing this mineral is its high metallic luster. It's very difficult to place lights for brightness to not spoil the picture yet and can clearly see the crystallization and shine it has.

Thanks, Oscar.

Of course Maialetto, there aragonites with impurities that present fluoresce. I have a fluorescent yellow aragonite for another place, but in this case not.

These aragonite that I have the Regia Mina none gave me fluorescence in long, medium or short wave.

Thanks for your explanation.
Regards, Oscar.
