Dodgy Thursday. Had this "yellow Sapphire" come across my desk today accompanied by a lab report. As always I did my own test. Turns out the RI is 1.61 to 1.62, meaning the stone is actually Topaz, not Sapphire. The yellow color is due to the stone being dyed. Small traces of the dye can be seen in the last picture.
I find it funny that they will incorrectly identify the stone (and state the tested RI and SG no less) but when it comes to treatment, they still list is as Hue Enhanced (very ambiguous).

Update on the little Sapphire, I mean Topaz. Left it in a bag of Acetone (nail polish remover) and would you look at that, the stone is colourless and the liquid is now yellow. Any want a make of Sapphire juice?

Are you certain the IR you recorded was done after you had removed the film of color? Did you recheck the density? Did you determine the optic sign and birefringence with your own refractometer?
Maybe you should consider getting a Raman. I think you might owe them an apology.

That is because that lab deals with gemologists (jewelry shills) who want their certificate to say that a "treated" stone is natural and not ARTIFICIAL.

I sure did, I took readings before and after. There is no mistaking that it is Topaz. Inclusions are not consistent with Sapphire either. What will Raman tell me that a simple RI test wont?

Have you contacted the lab?
As of yet I can't find any details about them. GTLI = gemstones testing laboratory of India. Can't find them on Google and there is no contact info on the actual report. All I can find is a few ebay sellers with the reports.

My point is that the sellers are creating phony, fraudulent documents. It is not a lab creating bogus documents. Make sense? I think we are saying the same thing, Farshid, just expressing it differently.
