i need little help from you people. Actually my brother is incharge in Limestone mining here in north part of india.. It is possible to get stones from limestone mines?if yes what kinf of stone are possible ?
You would want to have a look at the geological maps of the quarries to get a rough idea of the geological setting. In a general way, you'll find more interesting minerals where the limestone has been subjected to metamorphism (for instance in contact zones).
As an example, on a geological map of the area, you can look for contact zones between carbonate rocks (for instance limestone or dolostone) and other rocks such as plutonic or volcanic rocks. Such contact zones will likely be more interesting to prospect than places where there's only plain carbonate rock.
crystal structure?i dnt know this thing.. could you please help me with this thing .. i really want to learn this gem thing,i am learning this things from online.. but i dnt have all tools ... can you please clear me with this thing ..
thank you cascillou , i will go through this .. it will help me ... i will come back to u
hash889, people are being very kind with their responses, but I wonder, just what is your objective? If you live in northern India, there are government departments responsible for mining operations, and exploration, who will have all the information you are looking for. Not every limestone deposit has other minerals involved. If gemstones were present in your brothers area, everybody would know about it. After all, gems have been searched for, and mined, in that area, for centuries. So, why are you not able to get local knowledge? Barry.
Hello Barry, I was just trying to get information, i didnt understand what is wrong with this. I dnt know much , but we are going on sapphire hunting this november. So trying to get more knowledge. I got knowledge from local people also but even they dnt know much. Only 2 mines are under government, else nobody knows. How many more you have there, locals are using blast to take out stones from mountains. But they are damaging the stones, i am just trying to help some people out there. With all these information , so that they can be able to dig out best pieces not blast them. Thank you

I think there's a lot of stuff still out there to be found. For example, we've found gem quality sapphires in two locations in Central Queensland outside the Anakie gemfields and have confirmation of a third. None of these deposits appear to come even remotely close to the size or richness of the Anakie or New England fields but they certainly do exist nonetheless. Good quality zircons and grossular garnets are also rumoured to exist close by (found by gold prospectors over a century ago who had little interest in anything except gold) but finding them is like looking for a needle in a haystack.
It's true that my part of the world has seen very little exploration for gemmy things despite it's potential but I still think that other parts of the world that have been more thoroughly searched over centuries may still have pockets here and there that have been missed.
I've no experience with gems in limestone but I think it might be as others have already mentioned, they are probably much more likely to exist where the limestone has been in contact with igneous formations. We have quite a bit of that here where I live but no one has ever bothered looking for anything. Local industry that quarries the material in a number of locations here refers to it as limestone but geology reports say that it is in fact a fine-grained marble - which I believe is limestone that was cooked by contact with the igneous formations that make up much of my local geology. I've heard of rubies in marble, one day I'll get around to looking down at the quarry or something
Good luck with your gem hunting hash889 - you will need plenty of luck but remember: the biggest part of luck is persistence

This suggests that they are already finding stones in the quarries. If so, do you know what these stones are? Can you provide pictures or samples?

[Yawn]..the only thing good you're going to get from limestone, for the most part, is a elemental coloring chromophore. That by itself means nothing, but if you wait a couple hundred million years for it to undergo regional metamorphism, then you may have something.(think Mozambique Orogenic belt)
