I just got some bekily color change garnets from Multicolour, but they're small accent size stones and I can't seem to produce an incandescent light adequate to show the color change. I've tried candle, and I tried a lamp with a small incandescent light, but the stones just seem to go dark. I can see the red/pink a bit at certain angles, but it's not enough to photograph, it's just not enough light.

So how do you produce the right lighting for photographing? You just can't get proper incandescent lighting anymore, everything has switched to cfl, at least around here.

Use filters.

I wouldn't even know what to look for, Dr. Hanneman. What type of filter do you mean?

I suspect,Dr. Hanneman is referring to his color change filter.

Is that practical if I want to photograph a piece of jewellery once I've set all the stones? I've seen a picture of the filter and the window doesn't look all that big on it.

I think you could sort it out with the filter.
I would try to photograph the colorchanger with an incandescent light bulb and in daylight.

You know kinda like how the buyer will see them.
No affiliation with this site, but I prefer incandescent light in my home because things look prettier.

Yeah, I'd rather do it with lighting for that reason as well. I'll have to take a look around and see what I can find.

Often the color change garnets are very dark. If they look just way dark in normal incandescent light, what's the purpose of flooding them excessive light for a picture. Normally, when taking a picture of a stone you want the picture to look like the stone does in real life.

The problem I'm having is that I don't have normal incandescent light, even with the lamp I have it's only the light of a single candle. That's what I was saying, we don't have easy access to incandescent lighting here. I forget that they're not phasing it out everywhere else, that's why I was asking for suggestions, I thought others might have found a similar need for alternate solutions.

I see that you are in Canada, where like the US, they are stopping the production or import of most bulbs. It looks like you may have an option (like wse do in the US) Both countries are allowing "rough Service" bulbs.

You should be able to get them locally.

If you look at the 1000 bulbs site (no relation, but I have used them several times). They do sell 220 volt bulbs and I think that they would ship them to you.

(I use to work down the street from their Dallas warehouse and have picked up some odd ball bulbs from them during my lunch hour)

If you need to, I can pick some up and send them to you.

You're likely right, I may have to visit a hardware store to find them.

Can't you find a Mag-light or an old fashioned flash-light and put the filter next to the llight source. Or, get some aquarium light bulbs.

I have one of those large flashlights that take the lantern battery somewhere, but I haven't seen lantern batteries in a dog's age. Again, I'll probably have to go to a hardware store.

This may be way too late for this thread, but I have seen excellent work done with an automobile bulb and a 12v battery. Later versions of the rig incorporated a heavy duty variable resistor to vary the colour temperature.

This is an old post but my input-when taking pictures with candles, place a small mirror behind the flame towards the stone to photo, the mirror seems to focus the light more on the item being photoed-works well for me- 8)
