Photography of jewelry, especially cabs is difficult. The better the polish, the more difficult it is. This interesting technology may fix this problem. I hope it becomes commercial soon:

HDR image processing could be a useful tool to eliminate reflections also. I have had success using this to eliminate reflections with photomicrographs. I don't see why it wouldn't be applicable to macro images.

I have found a polarizing filter can often be used to good effect.
