true, but for the purpose of the riddle I had to keep things simple, and neptunite most certainly appears black.

For the record, hematite is another stone that looks black but is actually rust-red (this is easily seen in very thin flakes, or when performing a streak test)

This would suggest the paradox of water. Perhaps an Opal, and not a pearl. I am as dark as the night, perhaps a black opal? and perhaps I should have read the answer from page 3
