Arya is correct in that my camera is too close. I have a 40mm lens and my camera sits about 6 inches from the stone. The stones pictured here don't show any extinction in the hand. Both these designs are very bright and preform well. I'll definitely be cutting them again. I need to bite the bullet and buy a new lens :(

Still in Cambodia with crap internet. I can post texts but can't open any email attachments or pictures or anything...which means that I can't open the GemCAD files that people sent me, which means I can't upload images of them.

I get back on the 14th so I might have to delay until then.

Cool, looking forward to seeing the designs when you get time :) I hope your holiday is both enjoyable and productive :) if your buying sapphires. If you wanted to extend the comp entries till you get back I could put in another design or two for the catagories I didn't enter as I now have more time.

Cheers

I believe he has sunk into the quagmire that is residency. While not as bad as in my day (120 hour work weeks, no sleep - there are laws against that now), it is still an incredible time suck. It will eat him alive. And when 'they' are done with him, they will spit him out! And we will call him a surgeon!

Hi all.

Just found this thread last night. Have not been watching the forums for over 6 months.

How did the competition go?

Was most excited until I realised I was about 4 months too late to contribute. Just finished cutting my first design that I felt is worthy of crowing about.

It has 5 fold mirror image symetry and a nice reflection curve in Gemray from 60% at 30 degrees to about 80% at 0 degrees tilt ... for Quartz.

The test cut in Chrystanite sparkles like a Tiffany Diamond and under lights shows some dispersion.

Was considering sending a copy to the AFG for their mag.

Would you like me to send a copy anyway or are you going to run the comp again?

A couple of your members will know me as Flashgp62 from the ALF.

Regards
Gordon

"You know the best example of this? Portuguese cuts. They look AWFUL in raytrace, but really nice in person. It's insane. "

This is probably because Raytrace shoots lines vertically down at the stone, which would be great if we lit the subject with our eyes.

Programs like Gemray are better at giving an overall idea on what the stone will look like. As they give a representation over a range of angles.

Ps sorry about the quote. The quote function is a bit hard to use on a phone's brouser.

I know I'm posting on a really old thread, but I don't see where the results from the competition were posted and where the designs are.

Did this contest complete?

I'm curious about the Rainbowlicious entries as I'm now the proud owner of a 1.4kg hunk of Lithium Niobate that needs a sufficiently jazzy design :)
