Greetings all;

Wow, it's been a long time since I posted (too many distractions in life) but I do drop in occassionally, love what you've done with the place. The quality of this board just keeps getting better and I love "The Gemology Project", amazing stuff!

It looks like it's also been awhile since there was a quiz here, so I thought I would put one up. However, I must warn you that it will be a bit of a plug for an upcoming conference (I'm hoping to post the details in the Upcoming Shows and Events section), so if you're not interested, stop here.

For those of you that didn't stop, here's the incentive... I have 2 quartz crystals to give away as prizes. These aren't regular crystals, they are herkimer diamond type crystals with petroleum, air, and bitumen-like inclusions. They are the same type (and probably locality as this one: http://gemologyonline.com/Forum/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=2247
They are smaller though. One is about 10mmx7mm (just under 3 cts) and the other is 10mmx5mm (just over 2 cts). Both have inclusions (sometimes 3 or 4) with visible bubbles that move. Sorry I don't have pictures but I can assure you they are beautiful. The crystals are eye clean, except for the petroleum inclusions. Oh yeah, I'll cover shipping costs.

Here's the shameless plug/questions that you need to answer to win. Our group in Vancouver, BC is hosting the Gemmology Conference this year and we have gathered an AMAZING group of speakers again. The conference will be in late October so set that time aside on your calendar (as if you needed another reason to visit the 3rd most liveable city in the world). I'll post a link to the website soon as it is undergoing changes. But, if you think you can answer these questions now, please feel free.

Question 1
Name the keynote speaker and 6 other speakers at the conference.

Question 2
If you are a member of 1 of 5 gemmological groups you can get a discounted registration rate. Name 4 of those groups/organizations.

Good luck
ars

No, you're not off-base, you're frighteningly close.

Question 1
You have 5 of 6. It looks like an old list so some of the speakers have changed. Your first 4 are correct and one of the others is also correct. However, you're still missing the keynote speaker; she hasn't been announced yet (that's a hint).

Questions 2
Your first 3 are technically correct: CGA, CGS, and GIA. The last one is the local college so it wouldn't necessarily qualify as an "organization" but it shouldn't be hard to get one of the other organizations if GIA is in there.

Sorry, no prize yet.

Very close. You've identified 6 of the speakers (one of those guys isn't correct anymore). However, the questions was identify the Keynote speaker and 6 others.

Sorry AIGS members, you don't qualify for a discount. The 5th one is AGA.

So, once again MoDo you appear to be a winner of 1 of the crystals, the other is still available.

Hi Doos/Snizzy;

Yes it has been a long time, this upcoming conference and a friend's new interest in gems has prompted me to get back into it.

The quiz is still open. MoDo has claimed one of the crystals for Question 2, the eligible organizations.

Question 1 has not yet been answered correctly but I'll give a few more hints because there is no answer yet on the internet. As for your guesses...

Richard Drucker - YES
Alan Hodgkinson - YES (but NO to the key note)
Richard Hughes - YES
Dr. David Fisher - YES
Martin Irving - NO, he's cancelled
Dr. Lee Groat - NO, also cancelled
Geoff Dominy - YES

So, the keynote is still missing, although someone did mention her name. The rest of the list has yet to be posted on the net but there is one other big name here that could be "included".

(was that too subtle?)

Yes Doos, that's 6 plus the keynote.

If you and MoDo can PM me a mailing address, I'll try to get them out next week. Tomorrow and monday are holidays here for government people so nothing will get done until next week. :roll:

Although I usually decline the prizes, I'm glad I didn't this time. It has a very high WOW factor in it.
As promised it will go straight into the traveling stones program so every student is able to see it.

Thanks soo much for that wonderful and typical crystal.
